Converting from cubemaps to cylindrical projections The following discusses the transformation of a cubic environment map 90 degree perspective projections onto the face of a cube into a cylindrical panoramic image. The motivation for this was the creation of cylindrical panoramic images from rendering software that didn't explicitly support panoramic creation. The software was scripted to create the 6 cubic images and this utility created the panoramic.

The names of the cubic maps are assumed to contain the letters 'f', 'l', 'r', 't', 'b', 'd' that indicate the face front,left,right,top,back,down. If a wide vertical field of view is required then perhaps one should be using spherical equirectangular projections, see later. This direction vector is then used within the texture mapped cubic geometry. The face of the cube it intersects needs to be found and then the pixel the ray passes through is determined intersection of the direction vector with the plane of the face.

Critical to obtaining good quality results is antialiasing, in this implementation a straightforward constant weighted supersampling is used.

Indeed, it was originally developed for taking famous painting and wrapping them around the viewer in a virtual reality environment. Key to whether the image represents an actual cylindrical panorama or an arbitrary image is the correct computation of the vertical field of view so as to minimise any apparent distortion.

If the following example the cylindrical panorama is exactly 90 degree vertical field of view, so in the cube maps the image extends to the midpoint of each f,r,l,b face. I'm currently working on a simple 3D panorama viewer for a website. For mobile performance reasons I'm using the three. This requires a cube map, split up into 6 single images. I'm recording the images on the iPhone with the Google Photosphere app, or similar apps that create equirectangular panoramas. Preferrably, I'd like to do the conversion myselfeither on the fly in three.

I found Andrew Hazelden's Photoshop actions, and they seem kind of close, but no direct conversion is available. Is there a mathematical way to convert these, or some sort of script that does it? I'd like to avoid going through a 3D app like Blender, if possible. Maybe this is a long shot, but I thought I'd ask.

I have okay experience with javascript, but I'm pretty new to three. I'm also hesitant to rely on the WebGL functionality, since it seems either slow or buggy on mobile devices. Support is also still spotty. If you want to do it server side there are many options.

However, hardware limitations on the ability to access six texture images simultaneously made it infeasible to implement cube mapping without further technological developments.

This problem was remedied in with the release of the Nvidia GeForce Accelerated in hardware, cube environment mapping will free up the creativity of developers to use reflections and specular lighting effects to create interesting, immersive environments. Cube mapping is preferred over other methods of environment mapping because of its relative simplicity. Also, cube mapping produces results that are similar to those obtained by ray tracingbut is much more computationally efficient — the moderate reduction in quality is compensated for by large gains in efficiency.

Predating cube mapping, sphere mapping has many inherent flaws that made it impractical for most applications. Sphere mapping is view dependent meaning that a different texture is necessary for each viewpoint. Therefore, in applications where the viewpoint is mobile, it would be necessary to dynamically generate a new sphere mapping for each new viewpoint or, to pre-generate a mapping for every viewpoint.

Also, a texture mapped onto a sphere's surface must be stretched and compressed, and warping and distortion particularly along the edge of the sphere are a direct consequence of this.

Paraboloid mapping provides some improvement on the limitations of sphere mapping, however it requires two rendering passes in addition to special image warping operations and more involved computation. Conversely, cube mapping requires only a single render pass, and due to its simple nature, is very easy for developers to comprehend and generate. Also, cube mapping uses the entire resolution of the texture image, compared to sphere and paraboloid mappings, which also allows it to use lower resolution images to achieve the same quality.

Although handling the seams of the cube map is a problem, algorithms have been developed to handle seam behavior and result in a seamless reflection.

If a new object or new lighting is introduced into scene or if some object that is reflected in it is moving or changing in some manner, then the reflection changes and the cube map must be re-rendered. When the cube map is affixed to an object that moves through the scene then the cube map must also be re-rendered from that new position.

Computer-aided design CAD programs use specular highlights as visual cues to convey a sense of surface curvature when rendering 3D objects. However, many CAD programs exhibit problems in sampling specular highlights because the specular lighting computations are only performed at the vertices of the mesh used to represent the object, and interpolation is used to estimate lighting across the surface of the object. Problems occur when the mesh vertices are not dense enough, resulting in insufficient sampling of the specular lighting.

This in turn results in highlights with brightness proportionate to the distance from mesh vertices, ultimately compromising the visual cues that indicate curvature. Unfortunately, this problem cannot be solved simply by creating a denser mesh, as this can greatly reduce the efficiency of object rendering.Cube maps are typically used to create reflections from an environment that is considered to be infinitely far away.

But with a small amount of shader math, we can place objects inside a reflection environment of a specific size and location, providing higher quality, image-based lighting IBL. Cube-mapped reflections are now a standard part of real-time graphics, and they are key to the appearance of many models. Yet one aspect of such reflections defies realism: the reflection from a cube map always appears as if it's infinitely far away.

This limits the usefulness of cube maps for small, enclosed environments, unless we are willing to accept the expense of regenerating cube maps each time our models move relative to one another. See Figure Figure Typical "Infinite" Reflections. When moving models through an interior environment, it would be useful to have a cube map that behaved as if it were only a short distance away—say, as big as the current room. As our model moved within that room, the reflections would scale appropriately bigger or smaller, according to the model's location in the room.

Such an approach could be very powerful, grounding the viewer's sense of the solidity of our simulated set, especially in environments containing windows, video monitors, and other recognizable light sources. Figure Localized Reflections. Fortunately, such a localized reflection can be achieved with only a small amount of additional shader math.

Developers of some recent games, in fact, have managed to replace a lot of their localized lighting with such an approach. This new coordinate space will allow us to evaluate object locations relative to the finite dimensions of the cube map. To simplify the math, we'll assume a fixed "radius" of 1. In our example, we'll pass two float4x4 transforms to the vertex shader: the matrix of the lighting space relative to world coordinates and its inverse transpose.

Combined with the world and view transforms, we can express the surface coordinates in lighting space. We'll pass per-vertex normal, tangent, and binormal data from the CPU application, so that we can also bump map the localized reflection. There is also a link to an old opengl. So could someone please provide exact information as to the requirements and reasoning behind it. In the following descriptions my starting point is photographs of the scene matching the ground truth. What I have found is that, on OpenGL, images with the default bottom-up orientation have to be flipped vertically and all images have to be flipped horizontally - something most people never seem to have noticed.

Actually no flipping is necessary, you can just apply a scale of -1, -1, 1 to the uvw coordinates being passed in to the cube sampler. On Vulkan images with a top-down orientation need to be flipped or a -1 scale applied to the y coord.

You have to swap the posy and negy images in the cubemap for this to work. But I am completely failing to understand why it was designed this way. All the OpenGL samples I have looked at in the wild load the cubemap from individual. Since these formats have a top down orientation the samples just work. Except for the left-right issue. I have found Vulkan samples using ktx files with posy and negy swapped whose images have a bottom up orientation mislabelled as having top down so they seem to just work without any scaling of the uvw coords.

What I am really seeking is a way to load the exact same cubemap texture from a. How can I achieve this. The requirements for cubemap images are specified quite exactly in the OpenGL standard.

The reasoning for using these orientations is apparently that this is how Renderman did it. A KTX file just contains a bunch of image data. How was that image data created? Was the tool which generated it used correctly, or was it misconfigured? For each of the 6 images, you should know which face you want it to go onto, what the orientation in texture space is relative to the destination cube space, and so forth.

It means I have 6. The files are correctly identified as posx, negx, posy, negy and posz w. I am making the. I know exactly what is in them. If I create a ktx file containing a cubemap with the 6 images all having a lower left orientation then the rendering of the skybox my scene background is upside down and flipped left to right. I am trying to understand the reasoning to see if I am missing something and in the hope that properly understanding it will help me find a solution to rendering the same.

Cubemaps are in a left-handed coordinate system. I posted about this on Facebook about 6 months ago. I just made the post public in case it is helpful to anybody. The tl;dr is that the image layout came from RenderMan, which has a left handed coordinate system and whose image coordinates have an upper-left origin. With those two things, the cube map layout is much more intuitive. Thanks cass.
